Survival food / emergency food rations can be great to have for when you need nutrients in an emergency situation, specifically if you need to intake while on the move. They tend not to take too much space if you toss them into a bag, as well as the fact they have a long shelf life. So if you stow them in a hiking bag, bug out bag , get home bag or your everyday carry bag, you will not have to worry about them spoiling or being bad when you actually need them. Even keeping them in your vehicle (with you vehicle emergency kit you should have) could be an option incase you get stuck or stranded somewhere.

In emergency / survival scenarios calories are what you are going to need for sustenance. You will most likely be under a lot of duress as well as tackling the tasks of trying to make you way out of your predicament, whatever it is . So survival foods and rations tend to focus on calories because of that.

While survival / emergency rations tend to be compact and portable and can be eaten on the go if necessary, you should also aim to stock you pantry with a surplus of foods as well. You never know when anything from food supply disruptions to something like a pandemic can close stores, keep you home, or kill the available supply. If each time you go shopping, you get a few extra items, you will be surprised how much you accumulate in a short amount of time. For the home, staples like beans and rice and all of the general , long lasting things are what most think of. You want to be sure though, that you are putting aside food that is not only of nutritional value, but that you will actually eat. Putting away staples that are very bland tasting will get you nowhere. You will eat them for two days and be disgusted. Canned goods and other things that can go with staple foods you put away is a good idea. Some are against canned goods for storage, but depending on what you are putting away and how you store it, it may have quite the decent shelf life.

Make exception for your diet in what you store. If you are a vegetarian, vegan or plant based then you have to know what you ca put away so that you can eat how you want to, should you need to rely on you stored food. Strive to put away healthy foods for the homestead as well as variety of different foods. Rotate your food out, eating food closer to expiration as you get fresher stuff to stow deep that expires no time soon. If you store bottled water, you should likewise rotate it out the same way. Bear in mind, water in plastic bottles over time get contaminates from the bottles with age (and specifically exposure to heat), so you have to monitor you water and probably rotate it more often than you food. If you drink water from a plastic bottle if should not have a funny taste, if so, it would be best to discard it.
