Stormproof matches are a great tool to have in your survival gear or kit. They are pretty amazing in that they are wind and water proof. If in a worst case scenario and needing to start a fire, they are a guaranteed way to get a fire going. Not everyone is an outdoorsman, bushcrafter or versed in primitive survival skills. If you are stuck in a wilderness environment or a power out / grid down urban environment , the ability to be able to start a fire is paramount.

Fire is necessary for warmth and cooking as well as purifying water which is high on the priority list. Being able to make fire is a very important skill. Being able to make fire without matches, a lighter or modern tools takes time and effort to learn. For those that don't have that knowledge, something like stormproof matches are perfect. Once lit, the wind will not blow them out. If lit and submerged in water, once taken out and shook just a little, they automatically re ignite. Unlike primitive / bushcraft methods of making a fire, they require skill to get an ember that you can place in a bundle of tinder to get a fire going. If not skilled (or lucky) you could go through many tries of getting an ember and trying to get a fire going before it actually happens. With stormproof matches, as long as you have you tinder, you are guaranteed to have flame to put to it.

You can find stormproof matches in various types of small fire-starting kits. Sometimes they come in just a small cardboard box with a striking surface somewhere on the box. Other times you can find them in some from of waterproof container that has a striker for the matches on the container or inside of it. These serve the double purpose of protecting the matches from the elements as well as from keeping them from being broken,

On the same subject matter if tinder or kindling, you can find fatwood or various types of small bundles of wood pre packaged so you have something as a burn source to help get a fire started. Sometimes these " fire sticks" are treated with things that will help them to catch a flame faster. This saves you from having to go find the starting wood, tinder, or element to get the fire going.

Improvise, survive and thrive.

Walk in peace, but be prepared for battle !
