Proper use of force in self defense
Under the Warrior Sciences University, fundamental skills we teach in conjunction with the warrior sciences, are verbal de-escalation and awareness / avoidance, but in terms of combatives, we also teach proper use of force. Most martial arts do not teach things like this, they just teach you how to fight but not the parts thatcome before the fight and after, and trust and believe that these things do matter A LOT….. in modern fighting systems such as ours, this knowledge is really important to know.
The warrior has to be responsible for their skills as well as actions, and in modern society, you WILL be held accountable for your actions, specially combative ones. In any situation you are in, you should clearly be able to justify your level or use of force when fighting, be it empty handed or with weapons. To teach a person fighting without teaching these things is “potentially” setting them up for very ugly consequences.
When fighting, although our aggressor may not know or care about proper use of force, and stomp our head in if they had the chance, as trained warriors, we cannot have the same mentality. We have to escalate and de-escalate as the situation demands. When we know the threat is neutralized, we halt and break contact, we do not continue to pummel and beat a downed opponent. This does not mean you should hold back or fight any less harder, it more so means do not go overboard to be taken by adrenaline. You battle full heartedly being prepared for anything with no preconceived notions If you are dealing with a threat and see he is empty handed, do not say” ill grapple him and restrain him” and as you close the distance working for a hold on his left arm, you do not see his right hand draw a knife and begin slashing / stabbing into your body. When left with no choice but to engage, do so ready for anything at any time and make no assumptions.
