Get rid of the "it cant happen to me" mindset
One of the biggest mistakes some people make is feeling like something cannot happen to them. People must get rid of the mindset that something could never happen to them. Criminal acts, emergency situations and natural disasters are seen in the newspapers everyday and on the news daily also. These things happen everyday be it in your city / state, within the country, or someplace in the world. Robberies, home invasions, workplace violence, carjacking, kidnapping, rape, gang violence, hostage situations and other acts of violence that predators or unstable people commit. This is apart from natural disasters and the havoc that follows in their paths. Everything from loss of power to displacement of people, destruction of homes and all else.
Everyone should have a action plan for not only self defense, but for survival in a worst case scenario too. If you have a family, this is even more so important. Your whole life does not have to be lived in fear or paranoia, nor does your daily existence have to consist of training and preparation for something to happen, this is unnatural also. Accepting these things can happen (awareness) and preparing (being ready in case) will allow one to enjoy daily life that much more. Free from worry of what “could” happen because they know what they can do.
Being able to defend oneself is one aspect of coverage. Be this inclusive of weapons (non lethal or lethal) or makeshift ones. Laws in your jurisdiction may affect having weapons. The failsafe is always empty handed fighting ability and also fitness and conditioning. Many overlook these two, as they are a package deal, but more so people think on weapons and equipment. If one is not physically fit no gear, weapons, or supplies will matter. All that stuff has to be carried and handled, imagine running, walking jumping and crawling with it on or in tow. Imagine trying to fight hand to hand (if necessary) and not possessing honed fighting ability or speed, strength, and cardiovascular endurance. Next is in a situation of natural disaster, having supplies like food, water and a medical kit. A multitude of other things can go in and around this. You have to look at your environment, skills, and needs when acquiring these things. You also have to look at your skill sets. Stockpiling gear you cannot use cause you do not know how is useless. People have a gear over skills mentality and it should be the other way around. Get things you know how to use or go attain the training / experience you need to utilize the things that will benefit you.
Take the skills you have and learn how to adapt and improvise with them, knowing how to use them in many ways as possible. Self educate, study, and be diligent and get out and practice / train. A little training goes a long way and you will be glad you did it if that fateful day comes where your skills are needed by yourself or those around you.
